Namanja Matic was left out of Chelsea’s pre-season tour in China and reports claimed he is closing in on a reunion with Jose Mourinho.
Manchester United are hopeful of finalizing a deal for the Serbian man in the next 48-hours, according to The Mirror.
Mourinho had targeted his former player as he looks to strengthen the core of his midfield ahead of the new season.
And according to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils will complete £50m deal for Matic this week.
Matic’s desire to reunite with Mourinho was so strong Chelsea boss Antonio Conte omitted him from the Blues pre-season tour squad which traveled to China earlier this month.
It is suspected that the Blues dragged out the saga longer than the Red Devils had hoped after beating the Premier League champions to the signing of Romelu Lukaku.
That coup is also thought to have promoted Chelsea to demand a larger fee for the Serbian midfielder, who has entered the last two years of contract with Chelsea.
Mourinho wanted to sign him a year ago but Antonio Conte blocked a switch and Matic started 30 of the Blues EPL fixtures as they regained the title.
United have admired Matic since David Moyes’ brief tenure and a source described him as ‘institutionally liked’ by the club’s scouts. Moyes was well poised to sign Matic in 2014 but the Scot dithered over a deal and Mourinho convinced Matic to rejoin Chelsea for £21m.
If the report according to the British tabloid is anything to go by, it could be said that the Old Trafford have plans for Matic’s Medicals this week.
It remains to be seen how things get unfolds this week.
United explored the possibility of signing Tottenham’s Eric Dier and it is thought the England international was ‘desperate’ to join the club, however Spurs insisted he was not for sale.
